A Brighter Tomorrow for M.E.

What does it take to be a mechanical engineer?

Traits and Qualities:

These are some of the traits that a mechanical engineer must have:

  • Creativity – in order to come up with unique ideas that may help in development
  • Critical Thinking – this profession is involved in objects with moving parts so they must think outside the box to evaluate a given situation
  • Passion and Dedication – mechanical engineers must be dedicated in order to have a good outcome on the task given to them
  • Good Communication Skills – in order to have an efficient productivity and also to promote good teamwork among your co-workers

Requirements:

First of all, we should know that Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) is a course that is taken for five (5) academic years.

  • It is recommended that students would take the STEM strand in senior high school. However, students can still pursue the course even though he/she took another strand.
  • The students would have to attend a university where the course is offered and would be taught different concepts that will enhance their skills that can be used in the future.
  • In 4th year specifically, students undergo on-the-job training in order to work in an environment where they can hone and have mastery of the concepts that they have learned.

Board Exam

According to R.A. No. 8495, it is required that all students who want to practice Mechanical Engineering should take and pass an exam.

  • All applicants must have an average of 70% in the exam; and
  • All applicants must not have a grade below 50% on any of the subjects

Applicants who have passed the exam are required to take an oath, usually done in PICC, before they get their professional license given by PRC.

TOP 3 FIELDS WHERE TO APPLY MY M.E. KNOWLEDGE

Aerospace

Ever since I was a child, I am intrigued with airplanes, helicopters, jets and other aircrafts. I am curious as to how they are constructed and how they function. If given a chance, I plan to apply my knowledge in this field so I can deepen my understanding about aircrafts and spacecrafts. I also want to contribute in improving the aircrafts and spacecrafts that can be used in future discovery.

Rail Transportation

We know that this field is responsible for the development of the railroad system in our country. Given that we are in the Philippines, we all know that we have poor railroad system and with that I want to help in improving it so we can experience a smooth transportation whenever we use rail transport in our country.

Solar Energy

This field is responsible for developing the energy from the sun so it can be used to generate power. I want to apply my knowledge in this field so that solar panels will be accessible especially to those areas that cannot receive adequate supply of electricity in their area.

The 2018 psme survey

  • According to the survey, out of 755 respondents, 673 answered that their license type is Registered Mechanical Engineer (RME), which is very disturbing because Professional Mechanical Engineers (PME) are given a lot of better opportunities in our industry.
  • The shortage of PMEs in our country would greatly affect the engineering industry because RMEs have limited practice compared to PMEs. With that, if most of the mechanical engineers are RMEs only, the things that they can contribute in the industry will be quite limited.
  • Lastly, in my opinion, our industry should take steps regarding this issue immediately so that more RMEs will be enticed to upgrade their license.
