ARTVENTURE

WHAT IS ART?

Ever since I was young, my definition of art revolves around something that has to do with paintings or works made by famous artists. Also, I knew art as the subject in our school, where we typically draw, and that was it. In addition, my thought about art is that it is only aesthetic to our eyes. The reason why I find art this way is because of the standard set by our society. However, as time passed by, my definition changed, and ARTS 1 helped me realize what real art is. Artventure was the title of my portfolio since I felt like I was taking an adventure when I took this subject because of the different learnings that I have gained. Now let us go through my learning experience in this subject, a subject about critical perspectives in the arts.

MY FAVORITE ACTIVITIES/DISCUSSIONS

THE LEFT OUT SCULPTURE

This discussion made me realize many things about the status of the people who are in need. This sculpture resembles a homeless person. Some people were passing by the art, and some were concerned and tried to rip the “plastic bag” since they thought there was an alive person inside. This project made me realize that art can indeed show the reality that we are living just by doing an experiment.

TZARA’S BAG

This activity was my favorite of all because it does not follow any rules. Since I am not that good when it comes to making poems, I enjoyed doing this activity. We will just pick the words randomly in order for us to make a poem and that’s it. I appreciated this activity since I like things that does not follow any pattern

BANKSY’S LOVE IS IN THE BIN

I also like doing this activity since it made me realize the true situation of the art industry, not just in other countries but also in our country. This activity is a stunt to disappoint the buyers and abandon the art. This is an art of Banksy, and he tried to shred it during the auction but only succeeded halfway. Instead of seeing the disappointment in the buyers, the price of the artwork just increased even more. It showed that the buyers did not treat the art in terms of its artistic value. They just want it because it came from a well-known artist. What if the situation changed and this stunt was performed by a less popular artist? I doubt that it will still be bought by the bidders. It only just showed that the rich treat art as a commodity.

PORTFOLIO OF MY ACTIVITIES

ART AFTER TAKING THE SUBJECT

After taking the subject, some realizations made me change my definition of art. In addition, it changed my outlook, widened my knowledge about art, and made me critical when I look at art. At first, I thought all art was just for aesthetical purposes only. As I was learning about the subject, it made me think that there are artworks that are not aesthetically beautiful but can be considered art. Also, I learned that art is everywhere if we think critically. I also realized the sad reality that art is a commodity for some people. Art must not be treated that way but be treated by looking at the true value hidden behind the art because, in every art, there is a meaning behind it. Yes, the artist made it for fun, but I am sure that all artists have an inspiration behind creating the art resulting in different meanings that the art can give. Also, we must appreciate the art itself because I am sure that the artist put all his efforts into making the artwork. To summarize my point, I want to say that art should be appreciated according to its true meaning, and we must enjoy every art we will encounter.

Thank You Very Much Ma’am Toraldo! ❤️

A Brighter Tomorrow for M.E.

What does it take to be a mechanical engineer?

Traits and Qualities:

These are some of the traits that a mechanical engineer must have:

  • Creativity – in order to come up with unique ideas that may help in development
  • Critical Thinking – this profession is involved in objects with moving parts so they must think outside the box to evaluate a given situation
  • Passion and Dedication – mechanical engineers must be dedicated in order to have a good outcome on the task given to them
  • Good Communication Skills – in order to have an efficient productivity and also to promote good teamwork among your co-workers

Requirements:

First of all, we should know that Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) is a course that is taken for five (5) academic years.

  • It is recommended that students would take the STEM strand in senior high school. However, students can still pursue the course even though he/she took another strand.
  • The students would have to attend a university where the course is offered and would be taught different concepts that will enhance their skills that can be used in the future.
  • In 4th year specifically, students undergo on-the-job training in order to work in an environment where they can hone and have mastery of the concepts that they have learned.

Board Exam

According to R.A. No. 8495, it is required that all students who want to practice Mechanical Engineering should take and pass an exam.

  • All applicants must have an average of 70% in the exam; and
  • All applicants must not have a grade below 50% on any of the subjects

Applicants who have passed the exam are required to take an oath, usually done in PICC, before they get their professional license given by PRC.

TOP 3 FIELDS WHERE TO APPLY MY M.E. KNOWLEDGE

Aerospace

Ever since I was a child, I am intrigued with airplanes, helicopters, jets and other aircrafts. I am curious as to how they are constructed and how they function. If given a chance, I plan to apply my knowledge in this field so I can deepen my understanding about aircrafts and spacecrafts. I also want to contribute in improving the aircrafts and spacecrafts that can be used in future discovery.

Rail Transportation

We know that this field is responsible for the development of the railroad system in our country. Given that we are in the Philippines, we all know that we have poor railroad system and with that I want to help in improving it so we can experience a smooth transportation whenever we use rail transport in our country.

Solar Energy

This field is responsible for developing the energy from the sun so it can be used to generate power. I want to apply my knowledge in this field so that solar panels will be accessible especially to those areas that cannot receive adequate supply of electricity in their area.

The 2018 psme survey

  • According to the survey, out of 755 respondents, 673 answered that their license type is Registered Mechanical Engineer (RME), which is very disturbing because Professional Mechanical Engineers (PME) are given a lot of better opportunities in our industry.
  • The shortage of PMEs in our country would greatly affect the engineering industry because RMEs have limited practice compared to PMEs. With that, if most of the mechanical engineers are RMEs only, the things that they can contribute in the industry will be quite limited.
  • Lastly, in my opinion, our industry should take steps regarding this issue immediately so that more RMEs will be enticed to upgrade their license.

Pandemia ka lang, I am Filipino

What is Covid-19?

According to World Health Organization (WHO), Covid-19 is caused by SARS-CoV 2, a new strain of coronavirus. WHO first discovered this disease, December 2019, when a report was made stating that there is a cluster of ‘viral pneumonia’ in Wuhan, China.

How it is transmitted?

COVID-19 is usually transmitted when an infected person had a close or direct contact with another person. The virus can spread when an infected person cough, sneeze, speak, sing or even when they breathe heavily. It can also spread when infected people contaminated a certain object meaning they sneeze, cough on, or touch surfaces such as doorknobs, tables and handrails. People who will touch these contaminated surfaces may also be infected.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms are fever, dry cough and fatigue. You will know if a person has severe type of COVID-19 if they experience difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite, confusion and a body temperature above 38 °C . People, regardless of age, should seek immediate medical care if they experience symptoms which are associated with severe type of COVID-19.

COVID-19 IN THE PHILIPPINES

The first recorded case in the Philippines was confirmed on January 30, 2020, when a 38-year old woman from Wuhan, China tested positive for the novel coronavirus. On March 7, the first local transmission was recorded which indicates locations where the source of infection is within the reporting location. As of November 30, 2020 in the Philippines, a total of 431,630 cases have been recorded with 398,658 recoveries, 24,580 active cases, and 8,392 deaths.

PROTECT YOURSELF

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, besides from the given picture above, we must do precautionary measure such as practicing physical distancing and avoiding going to crowded areas. In our country, the government implemented forced community quarantine where eventually the lives of the people have stopped with just a flick of a hand; no work, no transportation and no mass gatherings which somehow helped in controlling the spread of the virus. Filipinos were obliged to practice safety protocols that was instructed by Department of Health such as wearing face masks and face shields together with practicing proper physical distancing whenever they go out.

Students in pandemic

Due to the pandemic, not only students but also teachers are having a hard time adjusting to the new normal set up of classes. All classes will be held online because students are not allowed to go to school in order to help in preventing the virus to spread. In our country, not all students are privileged enough to attend online learning. They lack resources like laptop and cellphones that will be used in this kind of learning and also they do not have a very conducive place to learn. In addition to this, they also experience a lot of stress because of many distractions like having a bad internet connection and different noises around them. Even though, we, students are having problems in adjusting in the new normal, we can always find ways on how to eventually adapt with this kind of set up. For me, time management is the most important thing that must be practiced right now especially when having online classes in order to submit the requirements needed on time. In my case, I usually use my free time to take some rest to be able to clear my mind. Also, having time with our families will be a great help in having a positive mood during this kind of situation.

Filipino Youth

We cannot remove the fact that people, whether a child or an adult, can be affected by this pandemic. We, Filipino Youth, can help in many ways. By simply following the guidelines that is instructed to us is a good way to help in minimizing the spread of the virus. We can also help in educating other people by using our knowledge when it comes to social media to prevent giving fake news. When the government’s response is too underwhelming for us, we can always voice out and be a part of the solution. We must always remember that during this kind of situation, cooperation is needed in order to defeat an enemy we cannot see.

Different People Will See You In Different Ways

I barely know myself just by the opinions of the people closest to me specifically my family. Given the opportunity to ask other people; my friends and my classmates to ask what their impression of me is, I’m glad of all the things they have said and given to me. In general, they said that I’m an approachable person. I’m also overwhelmed that they think that I’m an intelligent person; someone said that I’m a genius especially in math. Many of them said that I’m funny, cheerful and energetic. It’s also funny that they can see me like as if I’m a bully but the truth is they said that I’m nice and humble. What I like most is someone said that I’m a “FRISBEAST”, many said that I’m sporty and I’m a strong willed athlete. All of these things made me so happy and it flattered that they see me as that kind of person.

NET TICKET

Netiquette is a combined word of “internet” and “etiquette”. It is the act of doing or showing proper behavior in internet. In our time that everyone can access the internet easily, netiquette is important so misunderstandings will be avoided. Always remember that netiquette is a ticket so that we can have a good communication and build good relationships in cyberspace.
